Grenada gets its fragrant nickname ‘the Spice Isle’ because of its long history as a producer of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, clove and other spices. Grenada is the world’s second largest producer of nutmeg, after Indonesia – a big feat for a small island. There are loads of ways to enjoy spices in Grenada, from a small sprinkle on your rum punch, to a tour of a nutmeg processing plant.

The tri-island state had the biggest Olympic medal haul per capita at the 2012 London Olympic Games, thanks to our 400m sprinter Kirani James who brought Grenada great pride with the country’s first Olympic medal (gold), which he followed with Olympic silver in Rio 2016. Grenadians love sports; in particular, we’re crazy about football (soccer) and cricket whether at a local pitch or a friendly game on the beach. Don’t be afraid to join in with the locals on your Grenada vacation.

Grenada boasts the biggest shipwreck in the Caribbean – the Bianca C was a passenger cruise ship that sank outside St George’s Harbour in 1961. PADI Travel named the Bianca C as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world.

Our island in the sun should not be confused with Granada in Spain as some travellers have done, realising mid-flight that they were on their way to the Caribbean! Grenada was named after the city in southern Spain (meaning pomegranate) by Spanish sailors, then changed to La Grenada by the French and finally Grenada by the British.

The ex-British colony has the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean at River Antoine Rum Distillery in Grenada’s northern parish of St Patrick. The process of making rum has hardly changed since the 1700s, and you can enjoy a distillery tour and of course a sample.
